FURTHER Education students across Northern Ireland are being encouraged to apply for Study USA, a prestigious US scholarship programme that has transformed the lives of participating students.

Managed by the British Council on behalf of the Department for the Economy, Study USA enables students to spend an academic year at one of more than 140 universities and colleges across over 20 US states.

The programme is open to further education students who are either in the first year of an HND or foundation degree, or in the second year of undergraduate study. Participants can choose a range of subjects, including modules aligned to their home degree as well as options in Entrepreneurship, Leadership, Communications, Marketing and Modern Languages.

Luke Kirkwood from Ballymena, one of last year’s Study USA participants, received the Spirited Award at this year’s graduation ceremony, honouring his outstanding engagement, leadership, and contributions while studying in the United States.

Luke, an Electrical and Electronic Engineering student at Northern Regional College, spent his Study USA year studying at Shenandoah University in Virginia. He was recognised for his positive impact on campus life, including mentoring international students and actively participating in cultural and student organisations.

Reflecting on his time in the US, Luke said: “When I first arrived in Virginia, I was full of nerves and uncertainty. But by saying ‘yes’ to campus events, new friendships and opportunities, I found a deep sense of belonging. Study USA helped me grow into someone more open, resilient and grounded. I left with lasting friendships, unforgettable memories and the confidence to face whatever comes next.

“Being awarded the Study USA Spirit Award was an incredible honour and something I’m really proud of. I would strongly encourage other FE students to apply – it’s an opportunity that can genuinely change your future.”

The programme receives significant support from partner institutions in the United States, with annual funding of more than €2.3 million. The generous scholarship package includes on-campus accommodation, a full meal plan, tuition fees, a book allowance, flights and a £1,000 bursary.

Through Study USA, students are encouraged to broaden their academic and cultural horizons while developing critical skills that enhance their employability when they return to Northern Ireland.

Emphasising the impact of the programme, Mary Mallon, Head of Education at British Council Northern Ireland, said: “Study USA is one of the most impactful international opportunities available to students in Northern Ireland; we see their increased confidence and a broader global mindset when they return. The programme opens doors for participants, helping them build personal and professional networks, and develop skills that last a lifetime.

“Stories like Luke’s are inspirational and show just how powerful the experience can be. Further Education students are a perfect fit for the programme, and I would strongly encourage anyone who is eligible to consider applying. Study USA offers a unique chance to experience life and study in the United States while developing the skills and global outlook that employers value.”

Study USA, funded by the Department for the Economy, is Supported by the Skills Fund, Delivering the Minister’s Economic Vision. Further education students have until Sunday, 4 January 2026 to apply for Study USA. To find out more about the programme and eligibility criteria, visit:
