Study USA 2004-2014

Adam Fulton, Schreiner University, Texas, 2004-05

'There weren't many opportunities at home for a Interactive Multimedia Design student, so Study USA was an amazing opportunity to gain experience as well as live abroad. I explored all over Texas and travelled to Mexico during spring break; I managed to (just about!) avoid getting arrested on the way back despite forgetting to take my passport across the border. After I graduated, I moved to Barcelona, I've had a variety of creative jobs and now am working as a Senior Web & Graphic Designer.'

Jackie Lenaghan, Agnes Scott College, Georgia, 2005-06

'The ambition of the US students greatly influenced me. I engaged in volunteer work, joined campus committees, and undertook an internship at a local theatre's box office. This allowed me to blend my passion for drama with my newfound business knowledge, sparking my interest in marketing. I have now been in the marketing field for over 10 years. Currently, I am the Director of Marketing Operations at Kainos. I am grateful to Study USA for the influence it had on my development and career.'

Ian Hunter, The College of Wooster, Ohio, 2006-07

'A single year can change everything – and Study USA did just that.  I discovered a new way of thinking about the world. A key statement had left a permanent mark upon me was “Borders are only barriers if we let them be.  You have to work to see the opportunities”. I was able to hire a new Study USA alum and we now work side by side in our New York office. My profession that allows me to work across borders, drive investment, and give back to the place that set everything in motion.'

Bryan Henderson, Cornell College, Iowa, 2007-08

'Studying at Cornell in Iowa profoundly impacted my life. Getting the tennis team's Most Valuable Player award, I gained invaluable self confidence. I returned for my masters at Queen's University Belfast and then worked at a corporate accountancy firm in New York, Citibank Belfast and Sport Ireland Dublin, with a variety of Olympic athetes. My journey culminated in moving to Tokyo to work in education. Where should I go next?'

Jamie Mudge, Madonna University, Michigan, 2008-09

'Soccer dominated my experience of Study USA, my team even qualified for the national championships which was amazing. The programme completely transformed my perspective and academic focus, I gained independence which led to me graduate with a first class degree. I'm now COO of Taka a highlights and analysis platform for youth soccer athletes in the United States. The knowledge of the college sports system has been been key to my role, it's been brilliant to still be using my experience.'

Eamonn Cunningham, Nebraska Wesleyan University, Nebraska, 2009-10

'Studying in the US on the Study USA programme was a transformative experience. The life lessons gained from experiencing a different culture, navigating challenges in a new environment and meeting people from across the globe were profound. The communication & interpersonal skills gained from my Study USA year have had a direct positive impact on my career over the years.'

Sean Flynn, Coe College, Iowa, 2010-11

'I completed Study USA in 2010-11 and it was one of the best experiences of my life. I absolutely adored my college in Iowa and still have so many great friendships from my time there. I've had many friends come visit and live in Belfast; I've returned to my college and other parts of the US many times. The programme helped me develop many personal skills as well as boosting my confidence and changing my approach to life.'

Lindsay Rothwell, Kings College, Pennsylvania, 2011-12

'Personally, I have made lifelong friends who I am still in regular contact with, 6 of the girls from my field hockey team even came to my wedding in Belfast. Professionally, Study USA made me consider a career in business - I've spent 10 years working in consulting which I love. My year abroad also taught me resilience and gave me a new level of confidence. I am so thankful for the opportunity!'

Marie-Claire McGreevy, North Central College in Naperville, Illinois, 2012-13

'The programme pushed me to become more independent, trust my judgment, and take responsibility for my actions. After returning, I pursued an MSc in Management and worked in various roles, eventually becoming Head of Sales and Marketing at the Belfast Waterfront and Ulster Hall. That experience boosted my confidence and led to the launch of my own business, MCO Performance. Reflecting on my career, I know the programme gave me the foundations to embrace leadership and take bold steps forward.'

John McCaul, Warren Wilson College, North Carolina, 2013-14

'At Warren Wilson College, I found more than a new culture; I found a family, including my wife, Ashlyn. We married in 2018, blending our lives and cultures. After moving to Knoxville, I worked my way up from a hotel front desk clerk to a management position. Life in the US. has been rewarding, with two children and a growing career. Though I miss home, the memories and lessons from Study USA have shaped my life here, and it continues to guide me as I build a future'
