Professional Development Workshops

Our next Professional Development workshops will take place in Autumn 2017:

Integration of refugees, immigrants and newcomers into schools in Northern Ireland: Wednesday, October 4

Time: 4-6pm, Location: TBC

This free workshop aimed at both primary and post primary teachers across Northern Ireland will focus on effective strategies to integrate refugees, immigrants and newcomers into schools. Led by Nigel Arnold (Glengormley IPS), Ian Gilchrist (Millburn Primary School) and Kierna Corr (Windmill IPS) it will take into account their recent study visit to Berlin where they learned about the inclusion and integration of refugees in Berlin schools and how the education system works there to support children new to the country and school system through the use of ‘Welcome Classes’. Three key themes they will look at include the Newcomers, how they are viewed & treated in Berlin & Northern Ireland, the Families, how they are included in all aspects of planning for inclusion in Berlin and the Local children - how they are prepared for newcomer children in their classes in Berlin and Northern Ireland.

 Anti-Bullying: Wednesday, November 8

Time: 4-6pm, Location: TBC

In anticipation of Anti-Bullying week (13-17 November) this free workshop will look at effective strategies to ensure the well-being of students including ways to address and prevent bullying in schools. Aimed at both primary and post primary teachers it will be led by Christine Mahood (Gilnahirk Primary School) and Moe Emerson (Down High School) who recently took part in a study visit to Alberta Canada to learn more about the strategies and principles being adopted in schools there. Focus will also be on the new legislation around the Addressing Bullying in Schools (NI) Act 2016 and the guidance which is currently being developed by the Northern Ireland Anti-Bullying Forum. This workshop is an excellent opportunity to learn more about this universally relevant topic and develop strategies which could be put into action in your school.
